Silent Thunder: A-10 Tank Killer II

11Silent Thunder: A10 Tank Killer 2 was a first for Dynamix, being their major leap into Windows 95. It also represents their leap into higher end 3D graphics, with Silent Thunder sporting some of the most detailed graphics available at the time. Silent Thunder is a flight simulation, though it focuses a lot on action (primarily CAS – close air support). Flying low and taking out ground targets is certainly a joy, and the A-10’s sole purpose. Trying to bring down MiGs however, is not an easy task, since the A-10 is not a dogfighter.

You can play Silent Thunder in three ways – via Quick Start missions, Campaign and Fly One Mission. The last two are the most interesting – Fly One Mission is great for practice, allowing you to play in God Mode with unlimited ammo. The campaign mode is where the bulk of your skills will be put to the test, numbering 24 missions spanning 3 theaters of conflict. A nice touch is that events from one mission can carry over to the next – destroy a bridge now, and you won’t have to worry about it in later flights. As in USNF, if you screw up a mission, you have the choice to continue playing or end the mission.

Fans of the A-10 will feel right at home in Silent Thunder. With the graphical overhaul in check, this was the best looking flight sim in its time, and overall a solid, approachable flight game.
