Rayman Raving Rabbids

Since Rayman turned up on consoles like the PlayStation, SEGA Saturn or Atari Jaguar, it has managed to build up a large and consistent following. It was always about style mixed with slapstick humor and simple, clean fun. Raving Rabbids is a competent game with some good ideas and plenty of humor.

15_1The new stars of this action game are the cutesy though very unhinged space bunnies. These little critters have invaded the world with their hysterical antics and have thrown our hero into an arena. You have to fight in this arena by playing various mini-games. Every single mini-game in Raving Rabbids involves some form of synchronized button-mashing or mouse-dragging to perform various tasks. The problem overall is that this is the entire game. There’s no story (well, there is, but it’s sorta redundant), and what you are left with is a collection of unrelated mini-games that are  hit and miss as far as quality.

There’s a section similar to Guitar Hero where you have to time your dance moves. In another you have to follow a line on the screen to draw something into existence (kind of similar to the wand mini-game in Harry Potter 3). In yet another you have to hit a bunch of popping rabbids in a game of whack-a-mole. There’s racing, flying and jumping mini-games. There’s sneaking, dentistry and maze solving. You don’t have to compete all of them, but you do need a solid number under your belt to finish the story (which is pretty underwhelming, to be honest). In all, this game feels more like the sort of stuff you’d play drunk at a party. It’s dumb and it’s fun, but it can’t begin to measure up to previous Rayman titles. It’s just not the same.
