Bring plenty of Quartz Flasks with you.

snap3Mission packs have a tendency of notching up the difficulty, since usually it’s the hardcore fans who will go the extra mile of buying them. So is the case with Hexen’s Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, which presents levels that are several orders of magnitude tougher than the original Hexen. Enemies are more numerous, traps are deadlier, the levels are harder to figure out (which is to say you face more complex key puzzles) and the health pick-ups are merely enough to keep you from dying – and all this on the standard difficulty model.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anything actually new here outside of the tougher packet of non-linear levels. The weapons are the same, although are less effective with the onslaught of monstrous hordes this time, and the enemies are still threatening only by virtue of their numbers rather than sharp wit (hey, it’s still a Doom game after all). The singleplayer spans twenty levels through three hubs, with a further six levels provided exclusively for deathmatch. Standard emulators used to run Deathkings of the Dark Citadel include Zdoom – just paste the .wad file in the same folder and off you go!

  1. chris says:

Does this expansion come with original game too?

  2. No, i think you need the original hexen 1 installed.

you should install a source port like this one (http://dengine.net/) and run the game from there.
i can give you the deathkings wad file if you need it

  3. chris says:

will this work on risen 3d? or just doomsday?

  4. if it can read a wad file it’s fine. doomsday is just my favorite. but again, i think you have to install the game normally via dosbox to get the needed wad file.

  5. chris says:

i see, thanks. is the wad file in the download file? will i need to play the first hexen in order to know this one?

  6. 1. install the first hexen with dosbox (i’m 90% sure you need the first hexen installed)
    2. install this expansion using dosbox
    3. you’ll have the wad file in the game folder.. now use a source port with the deathkings wad file

  7. chris says:

will d-fend reloaded work well with these?

  8. chris says:

or what about zdoom or now known as qzdoom?

  9. David says:

i dont know how to get the wad file. i try to do “which file you want to put in, for ex C:\DWANGO”.

  10. redownload the source port version. made it easier to run now

Theoretically, this addon should also work with Hexen95 by Wild Tangent (the official Hexen port to Win95, which also makes it perfectly run even with some modern OS like Win7x64). All you have to do is copy the addon’s wad file into the Hexen95 folder. After that you launch the game as normal (via its launcher utility), and finally 1 of the multiple screens will ask you if you wanna load some external wad instead of the native one. There you’ll have to select the proper addon’s wad file from the drop-down menu & make several more confirmations thru the rest of the screens to come. If everything was done right the game should launch with new maps. However there’s no 100% guarantee it’ll work flawlessly, so be warned.

P.S. OPCG, could you supply the addon’s wad file separately please? Thanks in advance.
